About ChipAdvisor
Rate your chippy. Find the best. Settle the argument, once and for all.
Britain has thousands of chip shops and almost no decent way to find a good one. The big review sites treat chippies as an afterthought; the FSA's hygiene register tells you whether you'll get food poisoning but not whether the batter is any good. ChipAdvisor is the bit in the middle: a dedicated, opinionated review and discovery platform built specifically for UK chippies.
What's in it
- Every UK chippy on a map, drawn fresh from the Food Standards Agency (England, Wales, Northern Ireland) and Food Standards Scotland data. Filter by rating, category, distance.
- Honest community reviews: rate out of 5, write what you actually thought. No fake glow, no algorithmic ranking — your verdict shows up alongside everyone else's.
- Hygiene ratings on every listing, so you know what the inspectors found before you order.
- The Golden Chip game: a new chippy hides somewhere in the UK every day. Guess it from clues. Compete on the daily leaderboard.
Why it exists
Because saying "this is the best chippy in town" should be a real, evidenced opinion, not a Yelp star average from people who think chips are American. Because every region has a fierce, justified loyalty to its own chippy traditions and there isn't a single place online to celebrate them. Because the data already exists; it just needs a warm, opinionated, British-shaped front door.
How it's built
ChipAdvisor is a small open codebase: a static site hosted on Netlify, serverless functions for the review and game backends, Supabase for the writes, and a daily refresh pipeline that pulls from FSA / FSS. The chippy data is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
Who runs it
One person, in their spare time, because nobody else was going to. If you want to get involved (review writing, chippy data corrections, partnerships), drop a line: hello@biometric.co.uk.
