Plain-English ground rules for using ChipAdvisor. We've tried to keep this short and honest. By using the site, you agree to these terms.
What ChipAdvisor is
ChipAdvisor is a community review and discovery site for UK fish and chip shops, with a daily location-guessing game called the Golden Chip. We compile public data from the Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland and combine it with reviews and scores from people like you.
Your account
- You can read the site, browse shops, and play the Golden Chip game without signing in. To leave a review, save chippies, or appear on the leaderboard, you'll need to create an account.
- Keep your sign-in details to yourself. You're responsible for what's posted under your account.
- You can delete your account at any time by emailing hello@chipadvisor.uk.
Reviews and contributions
The whole point of ChipAdvisor is honest opinion. We're not going to police taste. But there are a few things that ruin it for everyone:
- Be honest. Only review chippies you've actually been to. Don't write fake reviews of your own shop or your rival's.
- No personal attacks, abuse, or harassment of owners, staff, or other reviewers. Comment on the chips, not the people.
- No illegal content, no hate speech, no spam, no defamation. We'll remove anything that breaks UK law, and we'll cooperate with the police if we have to.
- You own what you write. By posting, you grant ChipAdvisor a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to display it on the site, social channels, and editorial features (e.g., "this week's best reviews"). You can ask us to remove your reviews any time.
- We may edit reviews for length or remove ones that break these rules. We try to do this consistently; we won't always get it right.
Are you a chippy owner?
Brilliant. If your shop appears here, it's because it's in the public food-hygiene register. You can ask us to correct anything that's wrong (opening hours, address, name, closure) by emailing hello@chipadvisor.uk. We can't remove honest reviews just because they're critical, but we'll always remove ones that break our rules above. A "claimed listing" feature is on the roadmap; we'll be in touch when it launches.
The Golden Chip game
The Golden Chip is a free daily game with a leaderboard. No entry fee, no cash prizes. If we ever run a prize promotion, it'll be clearly labelled, structured as a free-entry prize draw or skill-based competition under UK law, with its own terms.
What we can't promise
- The site is provided "as is". We do our best to keep the chip-shop data accurate, but we can't guarantee that ratings, opening hours, or locations are current — always check before driving across the country.
- We don't endorse any individual chippy. Awards and leaderboards reflect community votes/scores, not our personal recommendation.
- We can change features, prices (when there are any), and these terms with reasonable notice. Material changes get an announcement on the site or in the newsletter.
If something goes wrong
To the extent permitted by English law, our liability for any claim arising out of your use of ChipAdvisor is limited to direct losses up to the amount you've paid us (which, today, is £0). Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't legally be limited (e.g., death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud).
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.
